Pilates is a strength building system promoting balance of muscle groups and strong stabilising muscles for good biomechanics and postural alignment. It works muscles concentrically and eccentrically through full range which is why it is associated as a stretch method as well. It was originally named Contrology by Joseph Pilates and is based on 10 Principles: Awareness, Balance, Breath, Concentration, Center, Control, Efficiency, Flow, Precision, Harmony.
I teach BASI Pilates which is contemporary and puts emphasis on the stability of the shoulder complex as well as the pelvis and lumbar spine. I teach on several pieces of BASI Systems equipment which offers an enormous and varied range of movement.

Pilates is an amazing tool for rehabilitating injury. It can optimise alignment and correct the movement patterns which are causing injury. The progressive resistance of the springs makes it very easy to work within a pain free range of motion and the springs can be easily adapted to simulate various activities and functional movements.

Pilates for sports performance is something I'm very interested in as a Cyclist and a Runner. I have used Pilates myself to train for several endurance events, XC cycling races, Triathlon and stage racing. There is endless possibility with Pilates to train for a particular sport as the nature of the equipment allows for a very versatile set up. It can rebalance muscle groups for injury prevention and give an athlete more longevity in their sport.
I am particularly interested in Shoulder stability and injury prevention for the Cyclist as well as for the Runner and Swimmer but Pilates can be applied to many other sports.

Golf
Equestrian Sports
Watersports
Climbing
